Not everyone has been to the bottom of a well. Some people have, but not everybody. Some people have maybe thrown some change down one, but they haven't seen where the change landed. And still some people have never even seen the top of a well. At The Bottom Of The Well, the debut solo exhibit from Max Schieble AKA Elbows, explores an unseen world both playful and dark, through original visual and audio works.
Elbows' visual works span across drawings, paintings, and prints. His witty aesthetic combines vibrant oafs, legged-furniture, and polka dotted-limbs, with themes of isolation, uncertainty, and identity. Influenced by cubism, surrealism, and cartoons, Elbows' figures found on canvases and prints are multi-faced, and disjointed, contorting and unraveling to reveal lots of colorful layers. His drawings settle on a simpler palette of black and white, occasionally with a hint of color, depicting scenes both comedic and introspective.
Working across multiple mediums, Elbows aims to create a more encompassing experience for the viewer. As a songwriter and producer, Elbows' style is rooted in jazz and hip hop. At The Bottom Of The Well includes a soundtrack composition, incorporating programmed drums, live instrumentation, and vocal samples lifted from classic songs and films, to be released online soon.
